Symbolism

Shield. The shield is colored black and white to indicate excellence in multi-mission operations performed day and night by the crews of Coast Guard seagoing buoy tenders.  The red chevron resembles the bow of a vessel and upon the black and white shield illustrates the exterior color scheme of the USCGC SYCAMORE (WLB 209).  The Sycamore tree is the namesake of the vessel and bears nine leaves to commemorate the USCGC SYCAMORE as the ninth of the Juniper-class.  The Sycamore tree flourishes beneath the weight of the chevron, underscoring the motto, “RESILIENT UNDER PRESSURE.”  An anchor encircled by thirteen stars is the traditional symbol of Rhode Island and indicates the homeport of the vessel in Newport, Rhode Island.  The USCGC SYCAMORE was originally homeported in Cordova, Alaska and the move to a second home is represented by the two buoys.

Crest.  The crossed sledgehammers convey teamwork, and the handles are colored red to symbolize the “heat and beat” process of joining two sections of chain together with a rivet pin shackle.  The Sycamore leaf is colored gold implying the passing of time, recalling the 2002 commissioning of the USCGC SYCAMORE (WLB 209) and the establishment of its official seal in 2023.  The compass rose represents marine navigation and safe passage and is illustrated in Coast Guard red.

In heraldry, the wreath (or torse) is a critical element of a coat of arms, it was the twisted band composed of two strips of gold or silver lace and silk by which the crest is joined to the knight’s helmet.  The torse is always composed of six twists of material displayed alternately.  The first twist is the primary metal color (gold or silver), and the second twist represents the primary color of arms in the shield.

Motto. The motto, “RESILIENT UNDER PRESSURE,” emphasizes the strength required to better manage the risks inherent in Aids to Navigation operations.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background, enclosed by a dark blue designation band edged on the outside with a gold chain terminating at bottom into a sealed shackle, inscribed “USCGC SYCAMORE” above and “WLB 209” below in gold¬.
